Have you heard of Design Thinking? It’s a problem solving methodology that may help solve your digital marketing problems.
I first learned about Design Thinking in March of 2006, when I read an article in Fast Company magazine. To me, it was one of the most fascinating problem solving discoveries, ever … I had to stop what I was doing and sit down to read the article.
At that moment, I realized that I’ve been “design thinking” my way through my career. Design thinking is solution based thinking. The glass is not half full or empty … it’s overflowing.
Step 1 of Design Thinking for Digital Marketing – Define your digital marketing problem.
Design thinking for me starts with caring and having empathy for the problem. That may sound emotional to you, but think about it for a second. Whenever you truly care about something, you can do amazing things. You’re innovative. You’re at your best. Start with empathy and observe your digital marketing problem from your customer’s perspective.
Step 2 of Design Thinking for Digital Marketing – Brainstorm and create many options.
The next thing I do to get into design thinking mode … is relax my mind, simplify my focus, and brainstorm for insights and solutions. I get in my zone. My advice to you, do whatever you have to do to remove all inhibitions and delve into your creative self … trust your instincts. It’s best to have a large whiteboard to sketch and ideate. Also have pen and pad to write notes. Online business growth and digital marketing success can be achieved by creating the must-have customer experience … brainstorm every customer touch-point and plug any bad customer experience holes.
Step 3 of Design Thinking for Digital Marketing – Refine your selection for direction.
Now, use rationality to narrow your ideas to the best digital marketing strategies and tactics to solve your business problem. Take your brainstorm notes and expound on your ideas with supporting research. Map out your plan on pen and pad, before inputting into the computer. There’s nothing more creative than your hand writing and sketches, scratch-throughs and squiggly lines included.
Step 4 of Design Thinking for Digital Marketing – (Optional) Repeat steps 2 and 3.
The Design Thinking methodology may require repeating steps 2 and 3 until you get the best digital marketing strategies to solve your business problem.
Step 5 of Design Thinking for Digital Marketing – Pick the winners and execute your strategy.
Through this design thinking process, you’ve surely ideated some great digital marketing strategies for your business. Now it’s time to execute them with precision. If you need help executing your digital marketing strategies, hire a digital marketing consultant to help you get started.
